Running a 25/9 gear ratio? Also, that's one reason I don't like the spline drive on BMX sprockets.

Yep, 25/9 it is. I need a spline drive because the cranks are too far apart from the sprocket. I think the real problem was how skinny the spokes of the sprocket were...

Is that a Tree sprocket? Holy moly does that have tiny spokes.

Yeah, the updated one has slightly thicker spokes, but I'm gonna get a beefy eclat one to replace it.

You could always throw on a solid plate sprocket.

The problem with 25/9 is there is way too much torque if you ride hard. that's why BMX racers use a bigger setup like a 44/16. your gearing ratio will be about the same but the torque load will be spread out across more teeth on the sprocket. Way less chance of braking.

If you went with a solid 25 front sprocket then the cassette will take the blunt of the load and will be the part that craps out next

That's a good point, but I really don't do a lot of hard riding, and getting a 44t would mean having to buy a new back hub. (My rear hub has a 9t driver, not a cassette, so it can't be swapped out) Also, when I ride park, I don't want to be scraping the sprocket whenever I drop in.

For the mean time, I've ordered an eclat sprocket; I've bought a lot of parts from them before and they've always been great quality. Also it looks a hell of a lot less flimsy than that Tree sprocket I just broke...

just goes to show you how things change with time. when I was a young whipper snapper all the big names in the x games bmx park & vert were Dave Mira, Jamie Bestwick & Jay Miron. They are all in there 40's now and all of them used to use at least a 40 front the 25/9 wasn't even a thing yet.
